MITOCHON APPLIED

In the end, Mitochon is about improving the doctor - patient relationship and people's lives. Look below to read more about what we call "Mitochon Applied".

John Nichols (Patient)
Age: 68
John was on a trip to Sarasota Florida to play golf with Walt, an old friend from his Army days. Their goal was to play five courses in five days, and on day three, while they were on their way to the golf course, John's car was sideswiped by another car. The car spun into the center divider and John lost consciousness. Walt called 911 for help and the paramedics arrived minutes later.

The paramedics arrived minutes later and rushed John off o to the hospital. Although he had regained consciousness, he had several severe abrasions and was suffering from light internal bleeding. Upon John's arrival at the hospital, the ER doctor examined him and attempted to obtain as much of his medical background as possible. John's concussion from the blow to his head during the accident limited his ability to think clearly and answer specific questions about his own medical history. John was on several medications, but could not remember all of their names and their specific dosages. This missing information was critical to the physician and was slowing the process of getting John into surgery.

Several months earlier, John's doctor, Mark Carlson, joined the Mitochon network and let him know that he could now securely access his Personal Medical Record from anywhere in the world. So while John couldn't remember each and every medication he was taking, he could remember his Mitochon Personal Medical Record and that he had his login information in his wallet.

Because John is part of the Mitochon network, the emergency room physician, whose hospital had joined the Mitochon network about a year prior, was able to log onto the system and obtain his complete medical history, including all of his current medications and daily dosage amounts. With John's complete medical history at hand, the physician discovered a blood condition present that greatly altered how the anesthesiology would be administered.

Simply put, thanks to the Mitochon network, John's emergency room physician was able to treat him with the same level of care his primary care physician back home would have.

Dr. Charles DeVries (Doctor)
Age: 45
Dr. Charles DeVries, a well-respected cardio-thoracic surgeon who has performed over 2,000 surgeries, had an office on the fourth floor of an older five story medical building across from a large regional hospital. Because of the condition of the building, he had considered moving his practice to a different location but the easy access to the hospital caused him to stay put.

Wanting to simplify his daily life and organize his practice, Dr. DeVries investigated the option of converting all of his patient records to digital files and making his office officially paper-free. Realizing that a move would some day be necessary, he understood that having a digitized practice would make the process substantially less burdensome. After he researched several different companies, Dr. Devries entered into partnership with Mitochon Systems to create a new, digitally-based practice.

Six months after digitizing his practice with Mitochon, Dr. DeVries was awakened at 3:00 a.m. by the phone. It was the building security alerting him that his office was engulfed in fire. He hurried to the scene to find his office destroyed. Within half an hour, the blaze was extinguished, but it was apparent that there wouldn't be much left of his office. Later, it was determined that the cause of the fire was an electrical short in one of the building's maintenance elevators.

In the days that followed, Dr. DeVries was devoted to re-building his practice. Although the paper charts that were once the backbone of his office went up in flames, with the help of Mitochon Systems, he was able to retrieve all of his patient records in their digitized format without losing even a single page of patient information.

Upon locating a more spacious office suite in a newer building across from the hospital, Dr. DeVries was ready to open the doors of his practice again within just two weeks. With Mitochon's assistance in restoring patient records and setting up new computer terminals, he was amazed at the ease with which his practice was transported to its new location.

If you talk to Dr. DeVries he'll tell you that he is certain that had he not made the crucial decision to digitize his practice with help from Mitochon, he would have been out of business for months, not just weeks.

Cody Anderson (Patient)
Age: 10
Cody Anderson is a fourth grade student at Louis Elementary School. One morning, as he was playing with a group of his friends on the jungle gym at recess, he lost his balance and tumbled nearly 8 feet to the sandbox below. While he was falling, Cody's head hit the corner of the slide and he was knocked unconscious before landing.

Stunned, the playground supervisor rushed over the sandbox where Cody was lying on the ground. As she knelt down to examine Cody, she knew right away that he needed medical attention. She called 911 and the paramedics arrived within just a few minutes. Cody was then transported to a ER for treatment. Because the school was unable to reach his parents, the principal rode with him in the ambulance.

By the time they arrived at the hospital ER, Cody had regained consciousness and was in a great deal of pain. The emergency room doctor determined that he had fractured his left arm and was suffering from a severe concussion. While he wanted to give him medication for the pain, the he was reluctant to do so because he had no knowledge of Cody's medical history or pre-existing conditions.

When the doctor finally reached Cody's father, he asked him multiple questions about his son's medical history, but because his wife typically handled the children's medical issues, Mr. Anderson could not give the doctor many of the specifics he needed. He did recall, however, that Cody's pediatrician had recently joined the Mitochon network and that all of his medical records had been made available online.

Using a secure password, Mr. Anderson logged into the Mitochon system and gave the doctor all the information he needed about Cody. Of particular importance is that Cody is severely allergic to a group of analgesic medications that could have triggered severe side affects had the been administered.

Thanks to the Mitochon system, Cody was treated safely and effectively and was able to return to school the following week.

Barbara Milton (Patient)
Age: 67
Barbara Milton was a relatively healthy 67 year old. Outside of being on medication for osteoporosis like many women her age, she had no chronic health problems and managed to maintain a fairly active lifestyle.

One morning, however, she woke up with a sharp pain in her left arm. Startled, she stayed still to see if it would cease. When it did not subside after a few minutes and gave way to a feeling of tightness in her chest, Barbara got on the phone to her doctor's office for fear she may be having a heart attack.

Her doctor's office seemed alarmed at her symptoms and offered Barbara an appointment that morning. When she arrived, the doctor examined her and performed an EKG, which showed no signs of abnormality. But, just to play it safe, he arranged for a consultation with a cardiologist and scheduled a follow up appointment for Barbara with him in two weeks.

Before she left the office, the doctor told Barbara about a new service he had subscribed to called MiLife, a feature of the Mitochon network. He explained that MiLife would allow his patients to correspond with him between appointments and track their symptoms day-by-day.

Because he was concerned about her symptoms but saw no cause for immediate action, the doctor asked Barbara to log onto MiLife and start a daily health journal to track any odd symptoms she was experiencing related to her heart attack scare. He committed to review Barbara's journal before their next appointment and also informed her that with MiLife, her cardiologist would have access to the notes during their consultation, thereby allowing him to make a more accurate diagnosis and assessment of her condition.

Now, because of MiLife, Barbara not only tracks her health on a daily basis, but has also learned more about heart disease and heart attack detection and prevention. This affords her the peace of mind that comes from being educated and from knowing her doctors are watching her condition, even while she is not formally undergoing treatment.

Dr. John Carlton (Doctor)
Age: 68
Dr. John Carlton, a family physician in practice for nearly 40 years, built an outstanding reputation amongst colleagues and his patients. But, as devoted as he was to his medical career, Dr. Carlton was looking to spend more time with his wife, children and seven grandchildren.

Dr. Carlton cared deeply about his patients and their families. He had struggled with the idea of selling his practice. How would he ensure that his patients were cared for in the manner to which they were accustomed?

Years earlier, Dr. Carlton had decided to digitize his practice using Mitochon's miEMR product. At the time he did not know it, but digitizing his practice gave him an incredible option when it came time to sell his practice. With a fully digitized practice, Dr.Carlton was able to sell just a part of his practice, easily transferring a portion of his patient records over to the purchasing physician while continuing to serve his remaining patients and working just two days a week. Mitochon's digitization of his practice allowed him to have the best of both worlds, more time with his family and the ability to continue to serve his patients.

Now, thanks to Mitochon, Dr. Carlton works just two days a week with his favorite patients and has the work-life balance he has always wanted.
